The window of tolerance is the zone where you can feel an emotion and still think at the same time. Above it you tip into fight or flight; below it you drop into shutdown. Here's what the zones are, why neurodivergent windows tend to run narrow, and how a window can widen.

The window of tolerance is the range of arousal where you can feel something and still think clearly at the same time. Inside it you can be stressed, sad, or excited and stay present, reason through the moment, and stay connected to the people around you. Step outside it in either direction and the thinking brain steps back while the body takes over—a shift that's automatic, not chosen.

What does the window of tolerance mean?

The idea comes from the work of psychiatrist Dan Siegel, who described a band of arousal in which a person can process what's happening without becoming overwhelmed or checked out.2 Inside that band, emotion and thought work together—you can feel a strong feeling and still weigh options, hold a conversation, and stay yourself.

The window has a top edge and a bottom edge. Push arousal too high and you cross the top into hyperarousal. Drop it too low and you fall through the bottom into hypoarousal. Both edges are the nervous system doing something protective when the load gets past what the moment can hold. Neither is a decision, and neither is a moral failing—the body is answering a threat signal faster than thought can.

What are the three zones?

Picture a horizontal band with a zone above it and a zone below it. The band in the middle is the window. The zone above is too much; the zone below is too little. Most of a steady day is spent moving up and down inside the band without crossing either edge.

The window itself is the middle band. Here you're alert and engaged, feelings come and go, and you can still think, plan, and connect. Stress lives here too—the window isn't a calm room, it's the range where you stay functional while feeling things. This is the state regulation works to return you to.

Above the window is hyperarousal. The gas pedal is floored: fight or flight, panic, racing thoughts, a pounding heart, a body braced to run or defend. Anger flares, overwhelm spikes, and the world feels like too much at once. In neurodivergent life this is the territory of a meltdown—the system overflowing, not misbehaving.

Below the window is hypoarousal. The brake is jammed down: shutdown, numbness, fog, a sense of going flat, heavy, or far away. Words get hard to find and the body wants to collapse inward and disappear. This is the ground of an autistic shutdown, where the system drops offline instead of ramping up. Same overload, opposite direction.

The reframe

Leaving the window isn't losing control—it's the nervous system taking control to protect you. A meltdown and a shutdown are the same overload spilling in opposite directions. Reading them that way turns a shameful moment into a signal you can learn to catch earlier.

Why do neurodivergent people have a narrower window?

Because more of an ordinary day already sits close to an edge. Sensory input lands louder and sharper, so a room that reads as neutral to one person hums with low-grade stress for another. That steady input keeps arousal raised, which leaves a smaller gap between feeling fine and tipping over the top of the window.

Two other differences push the edges in. Interoception—the sense of what's happening inside your body—often runs quiet or arrives late, so the early warning signs of overload get missed until they're already loud. And years of masking hold the system in a quiet activation that rarely switches off. Together they mean you can travel from steady to over-the-edge with little warning in between.

None of this marks a broken system. It marks a system carrying more load with less buffer. That's why the same meeting, the same store, the same hard conversation can land inside one person's window and past the edge of another's. How does a window widen over time?

A window can gain room, though the change tends to be slow and comes from support instead of force. The most reliable move is lowering the load the system carries—dimming lights, leaving loud spaces, softening clothing, and building recovery time into the day. Less daily strain gives the window more margin before either edge.

The second piece is learning your own early signals. Because the warning signs arrive late for many neurodivergent people, naming what the top edge feels like—the tightening jaw, the shortening fuse—and what the bottom edge feels like—the fog rolling in, the words thinning out—buys time to act while you're still inside the window. Catching the drift early is most of the skill.

The third is having reliable ways back to steady. When you're wired above the window, the move is gentle downregulation. When you're dropped below it, the move flips toward gentle upregulation—light, movement, a small amount of input—not more calming. Progress here is uneven, and a hard week can shrink the window again. That rebound is expected, not a relapse. How solid is the model?

The window of tolerance is a clinical model, not a measured law. It began as a teaching image, a way to give people language for states they already feel, and it has since shaped how many therapists talk about arousal and trauma.1 Its strength is that it matches lived experience: most people recognize the difference between stressed-but-present, revved-past-thinking, and dropped-into-fog.
