Examples of stimming: a long, recognizable list

Stimming is self-stimulating behavior — repeated movement, sound, or sensation the nervous system uses to stay regulated. Here's what it looks like in real life, across every sense, including the ordinary stims you might spot in yourself.

The short version: Rocking, hand-flapping, and spinning are stims. So are pen clicking, hair twirling, leg bouncing, humming, and repeating a favorite word. A stim is any repeated action that steadies you. It isn't a symptom to remove. It's a tool your nervous system reaches for, and most people use it more than they realize.

What counts as a stim?

A stim is any repeated movement, sound, or sensory action you use to regulate how you feel. The action gives your nervous system a steady, predictable input, and that input helps you manage excitement, anxiety, boredom, focus, or overwhelm. If it repeats and it steadies you, it counts.

The reason this page exists is that a lot of people picture only the most visible stims — hand-flapping, rocking, spinning — and assume the word doesn't apply to them. It applies far more widely. Clicking a pen through a meeting is a stim. Bouncing your knee under the desk is a stim. Twirling a strand of hair while you read is a stim. The obvious ones and the invisible ones are the same behavior doing the same job.

The rest of this page is organized by sense, because stims land through different channels. Read for recognition, not for a checklist. A note before the lists: if you were told to sit still, quit fidgeting, or have quiet hands as a kid, you probably learned to hide your stims or swap the loud ones for small, unnoticeable ones. Reading this list might surface a few you forgot you had. That's worth knowing. Suppression has a cost, and the stims never went anywhere — they went underground.

What do visual stims look like?

Visual stims feed the eyes with repeating or satisfying input. Watching something move, catch light, or repeat a pattern gives the brain a steady focus to settle on. These are common in people who find busy environments overwhelming and want one predictable thing to rest on.

  • Watching a ceiling fan, a spinning wheel, or a loading spinner go around
  • Staring into a lava lamp, glitter jar, or fish tank
  • Flicking a light switch or watching lights blink
  • Moving fingers in front of your eyes, or watching them wiggle in your peripheral vision
  • Lining objects up and looking down the row — pens, coins, blocks
  • Watching water run, rain streak a window, or bubbles rise
  • Scrolling the same short video clip on a loop
  • Tracing a pattern in tile or wallpaper with your eyes
  • Turning a shiny object to catch the light again and again

What are examples of auditory stims?

Auditory stims are about sound — either making it or seeking it out. A repeated noise gives the ears a predictable rhythm to hold onto, which can drown out a chaotic soundscape or fill a silence that feels too empty. Some people make the sound; some people replay it.

  • Humming, whistling, or making a quiet steady tone
  • Clicking a pen open and shut, over and over
  • Tapping a rhythm on the desk with fingers or a pencil
  • Playing one song on repeat for hours, sometimes days
  • Replaying a favorite line of dialogue or a sound clip
  • Snapping fingers, clicking your tongue, or clacking your teeth
  • Rewinding to the same few seconds of a video for the noise it makes
  • Beatboxing, or making sound effects to yourself
  • Crinkling a wrapper or a plastic bag near your ear

What are tactile stims?

Tactile stims are about touch and texture. The hands and skin want a particular feel — smooth, rough, soft, squishy — and returning to it steadies the system. This is the category most people recognize in themselves once they stop to notice what their hands do when they're thinking.

  • Twirling or stroking a strand of hair
  • Rubbing a soft blanket, a hoodie cuff, or a shirt tag between your fingers
  • Running a thumb over a smooth stone, a coin, or a fingernail
  • Squeezing a stress ball, kneading putty, or popping bubble wrap
  • Peeling a label, picking at a seam, or scratching a textured surface
  • Rubbing fabric, fur, or a pet's coat the same way repeatedly
  • Cracking knuckles or pressing fingertips together
  • Holding something cold, or pressing a warm mug against your palms
  • Spinning a ring around your finger

What are vestibular stims?

Vestibular stims involve movement and balance — the sense of your body moving through space. Rocking, spinning, or swaying feeds the inner ear a rhythm, and that rhythm can be calming when you're anxious or grounding when you're understimulated. These are some of the most recognizable stims, and some of the most soothing.

  • Rocking back and forth, seated or standing
  • Swaying side to side, or shifting weight foot to foot
  • Spinning in an office chair or on your feet
  • Swinging on a swing, or leaning back in a chair to the tipping point
  • Bouncing on the balls of your feet, or on an exercise ball
  • Pacing the same short path over and over
  • Nodding or gently tilting your head in rhythm

What are proprioceptive stims?

Proprioceptive stims are about pressure and where your body is in space — the deep input you feel in muscles and joints. Firm pressure and heavy, resistant movement can feel organizing and calming. This is why a tight hug or a weighted blanket lands the way it does for a lot of people.

  • Cracking joints, or pressing hands flat against a hard surface
  • Clenching and releasing fists, or tensing and relaxing muscles
  • Wrapping up tight in a blanket, or lying under a weighted one
  • Chewing gum, crunchy food, ice, or a pen cap
  • Pushing, pulling, or lifting something heavy on purpose
  • Squeezing yourself into a small, enclosed space
  • Bear hugs, or pressing your back firmly into a chair
  • Bouncing a knee hard enough to feel it in the joint

What are verbal stims?

Verbal stims use words and sounds you make with your voice — repeating a word, quoting a line, or making a noise you like the feel of. The point is often the sound and the rhythm in your mouth, not the meaning. These are easy to miss because they can pass as talking to yourself.

  • Repeating a word or phrase because you like how it sounds
  • Quoting the same movie line, song lyric, or meme on a loop
  • Making up a nonsense word and saying it over and over
  • Echoing a phrase you heard a moment ago (sometimes called echolalia)
  • Singing the same few bars again and again
  • Muttering a running commentary under your breath
  • Making sound effects, clicks, or animal noises for the feel of them

The ordinary stims almost everyone does

Here's the part that reframes the whole topic: most people stim. The lists above aren't a catalogue of unusual behavior. They describe things you've watched a coworker do in a meeting and things you've done yourself without a second thought.

  • Clicking a pen through a phone call
  • Bouncing a leg under the table
  • Twirling hair around a finger while reading
  • Tapping a foot to a beat only you can hear
  • Chewing a pen cap or the end of a pencil
  • Drumming fingers on the desk
  • Jingling keys or coins in a pocket
  • Doodling the same shape over and over in the margin

Research on autistic adults found that people describe stimming as a way to soothe themselves and manage overwhelming feelings and input, and that they resented being pushed to hide it.1 That's the difference worth naming. Everyone stims. For autistic and ADHD people it tends to be more frequent, more visible, and more load-bearing — a tool the nervous system depends on rather than a quirk it can drop.

The goal was never to stop stimming. If a stim keeps you steady and doesn't hurt you, it's doing its job. The recognition itself is the useful part — seeing your own regulation for what it is.

Frequently asked questions

Is pen clicking a stim?

It can be. Clicking a pen, tapping a foot, or bouncing a knee are common ways people give the nervous system a steady, repeatable input. Almost everyone does something like this. For neurodivergent people it tends to be more frequent and more necessary, and that's fine — it's regulation, not a habit to break.

Do neurotypical people stim too?

Yes. Twirling hair, drumming fingers, chewing a pen cap, jiggling a leg under the desk — these are stims, and most people do them without thinking. Stimming is a human thing. It's more visible and more central to daily regulation for autistic and ADHD people, which is why the word comes up more in those communities.

What are examples of quiet or subtle stims?

Pressing your tongue to the roof of your mouth, rubbing a thumb over a fingernail, clenching and releasing a fist in your pocket, tracing a pattern with your eyes, or humming under your breath. Plenty of adults who were told to sit still as kids have a whole set of small stims nobody notices.

Should I try to stop stimming?

Not as a goal. If a stim helps you feel steady and doesn't hurt you, there's no reason to stop it. Suppressing stims to look a certain way costs energy and can make regulation harder. The one time to change a stim is when it causes injury, and even then the move is a gentler substitute, not white-knuckle suppression.

We'll be using multiple venues in Austin for ND27, including Fair Market—a beautiful event space in East Austin close to many restaurants and hotels. It's 15 minutes from the airport and you won't need a car unless you choose to stay farther away.

Not just before, but also during and after! At least a few weeks before the event, you'll have access to an app that allows you to browse attendee interests and make initial connections.

Once the big week arrives, programming details will be added, so you can choose which activities to attend and easily make new friends.

Think of our schedule as a flexible framework. Each day has anchor points (two sessions where everyone comes together) that provide rhythm, but what happens between those points is up to you.

Want to attend every scheduled breakout or workshop? Great! Need to skip something for alone time or an impromptu conversation? Also great! We'll use a simple app to help you track what's happening when, but you're never locked into anything.

We design every NeuroDiversion event with overwhelm in mind. You'll find quiet spaces throughout the venue where you can decompress whenever needed. The schedule includes natural breaks between sessions, but you're always free to step away for extra time if you need it.

No explanation necessary—we get it. We'll clearly mark the quieter areas of the venue so you can easily find a spot to reset.

For ND27, we'll be working with hotel partners close to the main venue. We'll share discount booking codes with attendees at least three months in advance of the event.

Older kids and teens, definitely! And not just attend—they can also participate. There will likely be a few sessions that are appropriate only for adults, but the great majority of programming will be family-friendly.


Absolutely—and you won't be alone in feeling this way. We're creating multiple paths for connection that don't require traditional networking. You might enjoy joining a meetup where the focus is on doing rather than talking, or you might prefer to observe from the sidelines.
