Dyspraxia and dyslexia get mixed up because both make school and everyday tasks harder in ways that are easy to miss. The shortest way to tell them apart: dyspraxia is about movement and coordination, and dyslexia is about reading and language. One affects how your body plans and carries out actions. The other affects how your brain processes the sounds and shapes of words. They sit in the same family of differences, so they share edges and turn up together more often than chance would predict.

What is dyspraxia?
Dyspraxia is a difference in motor coordination and planning. Its clinical name is developmental coordination disorder, or DCD, and the international guidelines define it as a lasting difficulty acquiring and carrying out coordinated movement that gets in the way of daily activities.1 It isn't caused by a lack of trying, and it isn't something a person grows out of, though the way it shows up shifts with age.
Day to day it looks like clumsiness that never fully faded: bumping into door frames, dropping things, struggling with buttons or laces, finding handwriting slow and tiring. Learning a new physical skill—driving, a sport, a dance step—takes more repetition than it seems to for other people. Balance can be shaky, and tasks that need several movements in the right order, like cooking a meal with a few things on the go, can fall apart in the sequencing.
The planning side matters as much as the movement. Dyspraxia affects organizing actions in sequence, so getting ready to leave the house, packing a bag, or following multi-step instructions can take real effort. This is where the condition reaches past pure motor skill into the organization and working-memory territory it shares with dyslexia.
What is dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a language-based learning difference centered on reading, spelling, and the sound structure of words. At its core sits a difference in phonological processing—the way the brain breaks words into their component sounds and maps those sounds onto letters. When that mapping is effortful, reading stays slow and tiring even in someone who is bright and works hard at it.
In practice it looks like reading that costs more than it should: losing your place on the line, re-reading paragraphs to hold the meaning, spelling the same word two different ways on the same page. Letters and words can feel unstable. Reading aloud can be stressful. And the spelling difficulty tends to persist long after the reading has been propped up with strategies, which is a giveaway that the root is phonological, not a lack of practice.
Dyslexia leaves plenty untouched. Reasoning, big-picture thinking, spoken vocabulary, and creativity often run strong. The difference is specific: it targets the written-language channel and leaves much of the rest of the mind free. That specificity is exactly what makes it easy to overlook, since the strengths can hide the one area of struggle.
Dyspraxia is trouble with movement. Dyslexia is trouble with words. Where they meet is the daily work of staying organized.
How do dyspraxia and dyslexia compare side by side?

Where do dyspraxia and dyslexia overlap?
They overlap because they're neighbors in the same family of specific differences, and that closeness shows up in three ways. First, co-occurrence: carrying one raises the odds of carrying the other, so many people are assessed for dyslexia and discover dyspraxia in the same process, or the reverse. The differences travel together more than chance alone would explain.
Second, both tax organization and working memory. Holding a sequence of steps in mind, keeping track of belongings, managing time, and following multi-part instructions all lean on the same mental scaffolding, and both conditions make that scaffolding harder to build. A person with either difference can look scattered when the real issue is a working-memory load that keeps overflowing.
Third, the fallout looks similar. Slow handwriting, trouble with notes, exhaustion after a full day of compensating, and a knock to confidence show up in both. But the sound-to-letter decoding that defines dyslexia is a separate mechanism. Reading trouble can come from either source, which is one reason the two get confused.
Are dyspraxia and dyslexia signs of low intelligence?
No. Both are specific differences in how the brain handles particular tasks, and they sit apart from general intelligence. Many people with dyspraxia or dyslexia are bright, creative, and capable in areas the difference never touches. The gap between clear ability and one stubborn area of difficulty is part of what makes both conditions easy to miss.
