AuDHD

Autism + ADHD

A community-created identity term for being both autistic and ADHD, including the distinct push-pull patterns that can emerge when the two neurologies interact.

What it means

AuDHD is shorthand for being both autistic and ADHD. It is not a separate diagnosis in the DSM; clinicians may diagnose autism and ADHD together, while AuDHD is the identity language many people use for the combined lived experience.

The overlap is not simply a checklist of autistic traits beside a checklist of ADHD traits. The two can amplify, soften, or hide one another. A person might need predictability and novelty, seek deep focus and struggle to direct attention, or crave solitude and become socially impulsive when excited. Those apparent contradictions are often what make the AuDHD framework feel useful.

Clinical psychologist and educator Dr. Megan Anna Neff has been one of the prominent public translators of this interaction-based framing. Her work emphasizes that AuDHD has its own rhythms and patterns and that naming the push-pull can replace shame with a more accurate understanding of how a person's brain works.

What this can look like

  • You build a detailed routine because predictability settles you, then abandon it when repetition stops holding your attention. Both needs are real; the system has to make room for structure and novelty.
  • You can focus deeply on a compelling interest for hours, yet feel scattered and unable to choose a starting point when several ordinary tasks compete for attention.

Useful distinctions

A standalone diagnosis

AuDHD is a community identity term, not a separate DSM diagnosis. A clinician may diagnose both autism and ADHD; AuDHD names the lived experience of their interaction.

Context

Community note

Many people describe finding AuDHD language as the moment years of apparent contradiction finally made sense. The term belongs to the community; no single clinician or educator coined or owns it.
