You just spent a few minutes guessing how much time had passed, and the gap between your guess and the clock is the whole point. That gap has a name. It's called time blindness, and for a lot of neurodivergent people it runs the background of every single day.

What is time blindness?

Time blindness is difficulty sensing how much time has passed and how much is left. It isn't about not caring or not trying—it's a weak internal clock that doesn't send steady signals, so hours can vanish and five minutes can feel like an afternoon. The experience you just did was built to surface that gap in real time.

The term isn't a formal diagnosis. It's the plain-language name for a cluster of time-perception differences that show up strongly in ADHD and in a lot of autistic people. If it resonated, you're describing something researchers have measured for decades.

What causes time blindness in ADHD?

Time blindness comes from differences in how the ADHD brain tracks and reproduces intervals of time. Studies of adults with ADHD find they tend to misjudge durations and reproduce time intervals less accurately than peers—the internal timer runs, it's just noisier.1,2 Reviews of the timing research point to the same brain systems involved in attention and self-regulation, which is why time sense wobbles most when focus is pulled elsewhere.3

Dopamine plays a role too. What does time blindness feel like?

Time management is a set of skills. Time blindness is a perception difference underneath those skills. Telling someone with time blindness to "just manage your time better" is like telling someone who's colorblind to look harder.

How does time blindness show up at work?

At work, time blindness shows up as underestimated tasks, blown-through meeting times, and a calendar that feels like a suggestion. You mean to send the email; you look up and it's 4pm. You block an hour for something that needs three, then feel like you failed when the math was wrong from the start.

None of that is a character flaw, and it's worth naming plainly if you're being managed as though it is. You can't train your internal clock into being reliable, but you can work around it well. Externalizing time—visible clocks, timers, buffers, event-based routines—closes most of the gap. The aim is a life that doesn't depend on a sense you don't have.

Is time blindness a real condition?

Why can't I feel time passing?
