Executive Function Coaches for Adults
An executive function coach helps you build the scaffolding for tasks your brain does differently—starting, switching, finishing, remembering, planning. Not therapy. Not tutoring. Not productivity coaching dressed up in ADHD language. A specific kind of one-on-one work aimed at the daily mechanics of getting things done.
This page has two parts. First, a short guide to what executive function coaching is, what it isn't, and how to tell if it's the right fit. Then our vetted directory—34 coaches, most of them neurodivergent themselves, most working with adults rather than only kids.
If you already know what you want, jump to the directory.
What executive function coaching is
Executive function is the umbrella term for the brain's self-management system—planning, initiating, organizing, switching attention, holding things in working memory, regulating emotion under load. When those processes don't run on autopilot (which is common in ADHD, autism, and other neurotypes), everything downstream gets harder.
An EF coach works with you on the processes themselves. Not "here's a productivity app," but "what actually happens for you between deciding to start and starting." The work is specific: routines you can run when your brain won't cooperate, systems that survive your off-weeks, ways to make your intentions visible to your future self.
Sessions usually run weekly or biweekly, 45 to 60 minutes, video or phone. Some coaches work async with voice notes and check-ins between sessions. Some do body doubling (working quietly together on your own tasks) as a regular format. The good ones adjust to the brain, not the other way around.
What it isn't
A few distinctions that save time up front.
Not therapy. If the hard part is emotional processing, trauma, grief, or clinical depression, that's therapy territory. A good EF coach will notice when something outside their scope is driving things and say so.
Not tutoring or academic support. There's overlap at the edges—some EF coaches work with college students on study systems—but an EF coach's job isn't teaching you calculus. It's helping you build the container the studying happens in.
Not generic life coaching or productivity coaching. "ADHD-flavored" productivity content is everywhere now. An actual EF coach has training or long experience in executive function specifically, and structures the work around how ADHD or autistic brains run, not around a universal "peak performance" template.
Not a guarantee. Nobody can promise coaching will fix your time blindness or make task initiation effortless. What good coaching can do is give you tools and scaffolding that hold up over weeks and years, instead of collapsing the first bad week.
What to look for
Credentials are a starting point, not a verdict. The main ones to recognize:
- PAAC (Professional Association for ADHD Coaches)—ADHD-specific credential with rigorous training standards
- ICF (International Coach Federation)—general coaching credential, widely recognized but not ADHD-specific
- Specialized training programs (ADDCA, ADD Coach Academy, JST Coaching, and others) are where many established coaches trained and often appear on a coach's about page
Beyond credentials, the things that actually predict a good fit:
Lived experience. Many of the strongest EF coaches are themselves ADHD, autistic, or AuDHD. They know what executive dysfunction feels like from the inside. That's not a hard rule—some excellent coaches are allistic—but it's often the quickest path to "they get it."
A free consultation call. Any coach worth working with offers one. Use it. You're looking for whether you can talk with them, not for a sales pitch.
Clarity on scope. A good coach can name what they do and don't work on. "I help adults build routines around initiation and task-switching. I don't do trauma work—for that I'd refer you to X."
Format that matches your brain. Video calls exhaust a lot of autistic and ADHD people. Async voice messages, written check-ins, and body doubling are all valid session formats. If a coach only offers one inflexible format, that's a signal.
Cost and access
Coaching is rarely covered by insurance. Typical rates fall in a wide range:
- Individual session: $100–$300
- Monthly package (weekly or biweekly sessions): $400–$1,200
- Group coaching or cohort programs: $50–$200/month
- Intensives or courses: varies widely
Some coaches offer sliding scale. Some offer group formats specifically to bring cost down. HSA and FSA accounts sometimes cover coaching with a letter of medical necessity from a clinician—worth asking.
Executive function coaching vs. ADHD coaching vs. therapy
Quick orientation, because these overlap:
- EF coaching focuses specifically on the mechanics of self-management—starting, planning, organizing, switching. Most EF coaches work with ADHD clients but frame their work around the underlying processes.
- ADHD coaching is broader. It includes EF work but also often covers relationships, career, emotional regulation, identity, and life direction through an ADHD lens.
- Therapy is for emotional processing, trauma, clinical conditions, medication management, and deeper identity work. Therapists are licensed; coaches are not.
Many people work with both a coach and a therapist. They do different jobs. If you're trying to figure out which one to start with, we wrote a guide: ADHD coaching vs. therapy. And if you want help evaluating a specific coach before you hire, see how to choose an ADHD coach.

Frequently asked questions
What does an executive function coach actually do?
An EF coach works with you on the mechanics of self-management—starting tasks, switching between them, planning projects, remembering what you committed to. Sessions focus on building routines and systems that hold up over time, not on productivity advice that collapses the first time your brain has an off week.
How is executive function coaching different from ADHD coaching?
EF coaching focuses narrowly on the executive function processes themselves. ADHD coaching often covers EF plus career, relationships, identity, and emotional regulation. Most EF coaches also have ADHD training, and the work overlaps substantially.
Do I need an ADHD diagnosis to work with an executive function coach?
No. Most coaches don't require a formal diagnosis. If you suspect you're ADHD or autistic and want to work on executive function regardless of diagnosis status, that's common and welcome in most coaching practices.
Is executive function coaching covered by insurance?
Almost never directly. Some clients use HSA or FSA accounts with a letter of medical necessity from their doctor. Group coaching programs and sliding scale options can bring the cost down.
How long does executive function coaching take?
There's no standard length. Many people start with a three-to-six-month engagement to build initial systems, then move to monthly maintenance or stop. Some stay in ongoing coaching for years. The work is iterative, not a fixed curriculum.
