When CBT or DBT stalls with a neurodivergent client, the field’s reflex is to locate the problem in the client—resistant, not ready, limited insight. This course makes a different claim: the standard protocols quietly assume capacities many ADHD and autistic clients don’t have on demand—intact executive function, reliable interoception, homework that generalizes on its own. Those assumptions were never written into the manuals because they were never questioned. Once you can see them, you can work around them.

Module 1 maps the five specific failure points. Module 2 rebuilds the core CBT tools—thought records, behavioral activation, and exposure—technique by technique, with the key discrimination that runs through all of it: is this a cognitive distortion, an accurate appraisal of a genuinely hostile environment, or a neurodivergent trait that doesn’t need touching? Get that wrong and you’re challenging a client’s accurate perception of reality, which has its own clinical cost.

Module 3 adapts the four DBT skill clusters—mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness—for neurodivergent learning styles, atypical interoception, and sensory needs. You’ll leave with concrete modifications you can bring into session with your current clients, not a new modality to learn from scratch.

Learning objectives

By the end, you'll be able to

01

Identify at least 3 common points of failure when applying standard CBT and DBT protocols with neurodivergent clients

02

Modify core CBT techniques—thought records, behavioral experiments, and exposure hierarchies—for ADHD and autistic clients, distinguishing genuine cognitive distortions from accurate appraisals and sensory-protective responses

03

Adapt DBT skills training across all four modules—mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness—for neurodivergent learning styles, interoceptive differences, and sensory needs

All four DBT skills modules rebuilt for neurodivergent delivery—mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.

38 min
Module 4
Choosing Adaptations for the Client in Front of You

How to adapt all four DBT skill clusters for how neurodivergent nervous systems learn, feel, and regulate—modifications that fit your existing session, not a separate curriculum.
