# NeuroDiversion > NeuroDiversion is a neurodivergent-affirming community built around an annual in-person event in Austin, Texas, plus a large, plain-language learning hub about ADHD, autism, AuDHD, and the realities of living with a brain that works differently. The event is hosted by Chris Guillebeau (bestselling author and founder of the World Domination Summit) and is designed by and for neurodivergent people — fun, interactive, sensory-aware, and accessible. Two things live here: - **The event** — a multi-day "celebration of unique minds" for anyone who identifies with neurodivergence (ADHD, autism, AuDHD, OCD, 2E, and more), along with the parents, partners, clinicians, educators, and creators who support them. The inaugural event was held in March 2025 in Austin; the next event returns to Austin in March 2027. Always check the event pages below for current dates, pricing, and ticket availability. - **The learning hub** (`/learn`) — practical, non-clinical, affirming articles written for neurodivergent adults. Content is organized into topic clusters (executive function, sensory processing, emotional regulation, relationships, and work), each with a pillar guide and focused follow-on articles. Notes for LLMs: Articles are educational and affirming, not medical advice. The canonical domain is `https://www.neurodiversion.org`. A machine-readable index of the site's public URL sitemaps is at https://www.neurodiversion.org/sitemap.xml. ## The Event - [NeuroDiversion (home)](https://www.neurodiversion.org/): What NeuroDiversion is, who it's for, speakers, venue, and how to join. - [ND27 tickets](https://www.neurodiversion.org/nd27): NeuroDiversion 2027, March 24–27, 2027 in Austin, Texas. [Does autism get worse with age?](https://www.neurodiversion.org/answers/does-autism-get-worse-with-age): Autism is not classified as a degenerative disease, which does not mean traits and capacity stay identical for life. Cumulative load as a plausible explanation, autistic burnout as one experience that imitates decline, and how thin the research on autistic ageing still is. - [Are autistic people more likely to be LGBTQ+?](https://www.neurodiversion.org/answers/are-autistic-people-more-likely-lgbtq): What a study of 641,860 people found about autism rates among transgender and gender-diverse individuals, what a survey of 2,386 adults found about sexual orientation, why the direction of measurement matters, and why the cause is unsettled. - [Am I disabled if I mask well?](https://www.neurodiversion.org/answers/am-i-disabled-if-i-mask-well): ADA regulations assess substantial limitation without the beneficial effects of qualifying mitigating measures, a list that includes learned behavioural or adaptive neurological modifications. Why masking well does not by itself rule out disability, why application is fact-specific, and where definitions differ by country. - [Is "high-functioning" an okay word?](https://www.neurodiversion.org/answers/is-high-functioning-an-okay-word): Why it was never a diagnosis and why the objection is imprecision rather than offence, a study of 2,225 autistic children showing IQ is a weak predictor of everyday functional ability, and four concrete vocabularies to replace it: support by domain, executive function terms, capacity in context, and DSM-5 support levels. - [Can you be autistic and empathetic?](https://www.neurodiversion.org/answers/autistic-and-empathetic): What 76 autistic adults said about their own empathy, the alexithymia hypothesis proposed to explain the deficit findings, an information-transfer experiment relevant to cross-neurotype communication, and where the evidence stops. - [Should I disclose autism at work?](https://www.neurodiversion.org/answers/should-i-disclose-autism-at-work): What a systematic review of 26 studies covering 7,006 people across seven countries found about disclosure outcomes, the three factors it associated with the decision, what you can change at work without naming a diagnosis, and what US EEOC guidance says about how accommodation requests are made. - [Can a therapist diagnose ADHD or autism?](https://www.neurodiversion.org/answers/can-a-therapist-diagnose-adhd-or-autism): Why the answer turns on a person's licence rather than the word therapist, what CHADD lists for ADHD in the US and what NICE guidance NG87 and CG142 require in the UK, why diagnosing and treating are separate permissions, and five questions to ask before booking. - [How do I tell my doctor I think I'm autistic?](https://www.neurodiversion.org/answers/telling-your-doctor-you-think-youre-autistic): Why NICE guidance in the UK makes this a referral conversation rather than an assessment, what a survey of 420 adults found about perceived misdiagnosis and the clinical barriers behind it, what to bring, and what to do if you are not taken seriously the first time. - [When should I tell a date I'm autistic?](https://www.neurodiversion.org/answers/when-to-tell-a-date-youre-autistic): Why there is no research-backed right moment and how thin the dating-specific evidence is, what an experience-sampling study of 36 autistic adults found across 231 disclosure opportunities, what each timing trades away, and why safety is a separate question from compatibility. - [My child was diagnosed, and now I think I am too](https://www.neurodiversion.org/answers/my-child-was-diagnosed-and-now-i-think-i-am): Why a child's assessment can prompt adult self-questioning, a study finding childhood ADHD symptom screens positive for 49.1% of fathers and 30.0% of mothers of diagnosed children against 1.7% of controls, autism heritability of 64 to 91%, and why those figures measure family traits rather than how often parents recognise themselves. - [How do I tell my family I'm autistic?](https://www.neurodiversion.org/answers/telling-family-youre-autistic): What an interview study of 12 adults diagnosed in adulthood described about disbelief and about acceptance, why family can arrive with history and stakes other audiences do not, how to decide who to tell and in what order, and reactions people describe. - [ADHD and autism after having a baby](https://www.neurodiversion.org/answers/neurodivergence-after-having-a-baby): What a study of 117 parent dyads found about ADHD and postpartum depression and anxiety, what 21 autistic mothers described about sensory and organisational load two to three months after birth, why 70.4% of one online survey of women with ADHD perceived worsening, why recognition in this period has never been measured, and where this overlaps with postpartum depression. - [Does perimenopause make ADHD worse?](https://www.neurodiversion.org/answers/adhd-and-perimenopause): Why 97.5% of respondents in one online survey of women with ADHD perceived worsening at menopause while standardised scores in the same study showed similar severity across phases, how two studies of menopausal symptom burden reached opposite conclusions on samples of different size and composition, and the attribution hypothesis that might explain the gap. - [Why is my ADHD worse before my period?](https://www.neurodiversion.org/answers/adhd-and-your-menstrual-cycle): What daily tracking of 30 medicated women found about symptom variation by cycle phase, why prospective and recalled reports from self-selected samples name different weeks, elevated provisional PMDD rates in both ADHD and autistic women, and what the evidence cannot establish. - [Why do I keep losing friends as an autistic adult?](https://www.neurodiversion.org/answers/losing-friends-as-an-autistic-adult): What a scoping review of 22 studies found about autistic adults reporting fewer and lower-quality friendships, why the review locates the difference in preferred friendship practices rather than in wanting friends, how a 2020 information-transfer study supporting the double empathy problem failed to replicate in a 2025 registered report of 311 people, and why raters' own stigma shaped first impressions more than autistic adults did. - [Does having ADHD make me a worse parent?](https://www.neurodiversion.org/answers/parenting-with-adhd): What a meta-analysis of 32 studies found about parental ADHD symptoms explaining 2.9% of variance in harsh parenting, 3.2% in lax and 0.5% in positive parenting, where the difficulty concentrates, why no research has examined strengths in parents with ADHD, and what the five studies of tailored parenting support show. - [How do I explain my ADHD to my partner?](https://www.neurodiversion.org/answers/how-to-explain-your-adhd-to-your-partner): What 355 adults with ADHD described about romantic relationships, why a study of 33 married couples found adults with ADHD rated their marriages more negatively than their own spouses did, what a self-control depletion experiment suggests about timing, and why no study has tested how to have this conversation. - [How do I tell my kids I'm neurodivergent?](https://www.neurodiversion.org/answers/telling-your-kids-youre-neurodivergent): What a UK survey of 34 autistic parents of autistic children found, including that 25 children knew about the parent's own diagnosis while two did not and seven were complicated, why that study did not isolate what disclosure does, what the larger literature on telling a child their own diagnosis recommends, and which of it transfers. - [Is neurodivergence a disability or a difference?](https://www.neurodiversion.org/answers/neurodivergence-disability-or-difference): What the medical model, the social model and the neurodiversity paradigm each claim, what a survey of 504 autistic and autism community members found about which framings people actually endorse, why the strong social model view is not universal, and the 2024 correction showing the neurodiversity concept was developed collectively rather than by one author. - [Why do I mirror other people's personalities?](https://www.neurodiversion.org/answers/why-do-i-mirror-other-peoples-personalities): Why mirroring has no research label of its own, how it sits near the compensation and assimilation parts of the camouflaging measures without matching them, why a review of 48 studies found mental health difficulties tracked assimilation more closely than the other components, why nonconscious mimicry also occurs in the general population, and what the identity cost looks like in the qualitative studies. - [What if ADHD medication doesn't work?](https://www.neurodiversion.org/answers/what-if-adhd-medication-doesnt-work): What NICE NG87 sets out when a first prescription disappoints, including a 6 week trial at an adequate dose before switching between methylphenidate and lisdexamfetamine, atomoxetine next, and a second opinion after one or more stimulants and one non stimulant. On whether life improves, the evidence is split: a 2025 adult component network meta analysis of 113 trials found medications not efficacious on quality of life, while a 2025 meta analysis of 17 trials and 5,388 participants aged 6 and over found amphetamines, methylphenidate and atomoxetine all improved it. - [Do I have to take medication for ADHD?](https://www.neurodiversion.org/answers/do-i-have-to-take-medication): No. NICE names an informed choice not to have medication as a reason to consider non pharmacological treatment, and offers medication after environmental modifications have been implemented and reviewed. Within the 2025 adult component network meta analysis, stimulants and atomoxetine were the only interventions showing a core symptom benefit on both self reported and clinician reported scales, while CBT, cognitive remediation, mindfulness, psychoeducation and tDCS beat placebo on clinician rated measures only. Quality of life findings conflict between reviews. - [Does ADHD medication change your personality?](https://www.neurodiversion.org/answers/does-adhd-medication-change-your-personality): Direct research on stable personality traits is sparse, and what exists measures adjacent constructs. A 2009 study of 24 adults found no unfavourable change in self concept, locus of control or action control after five months of methylphenidate, with 5 of 10 self concept subscales improving, but had no untreated control group. A 2016 interview study with 45 participants, purposefully sampled for vulnerability to methylphenidate adverse effects, catalogued reduced creativity, loss of intrinsic motivation and flat affect. NICE tells clinicians to treat the fear as a misconception. No prevalence figure was found, and the emotional blunting literature is about depression and antidepressants. - [Do I need a diagnosis to get accommodations at work?](https://www.neurodiversion.org/answers/do-i-need-a-diagnosis-for-accommodations): Usually not a diagnosis label. US EEOC guidance says a request can be made in conversation and in plain English without mentioning the ADA, and an employer may ask for limited documentation about the disability and functional limitations only when the need is not obvious. Title I protection also requires being a qualified individual and a covered employer, generally 15 or more employees for the EEOC enforced provisions. In the UK, Acas states no medical diagnosis is needed if the person can show a substantial and long term adverse effect on day to day activities, and the duty applies when an employer knows or could reasonably be expected to know someone is disabled. The useful distinction is not formal versus informal but whether the request is linked to a disability. - [Can my employer refuse an accommodation?](https://www.neurodiversion.org/answers/can-my-employer-refuse-an-accommodation): Sometimes, and a substitution is not a refusal: US guidance lets an employer choose among reasonable accommodations, including the cheaper one, as long as it is effective at removing the barrier. Undue hardship means significant difficulty or expense assessed case by case against that employer's own resources. These sit inside a larger test requiring a qualified individual with a disability and a covered employer. The UK has no separate hardship stage, the duty depends on the employer knowing or reasonably being expected to know, and section 20 of the Equality Act 2010 bars an employer from charging the disabled person its costs of complying. - [Will disclosing hurt my career?](https://www.neurodiversion.org/answers/will-disclosing-hurt-my-career): Career disparities are measured; the causal effect of disclosure on a real career is not. UK graduate outcomes surveys covered 1,326,416 graduates of whom 5,646 identified as autistic, with income data for only 1,095 autistic graduates in full time work and disability status self reported, so the authors call income conclusions tentative. A 2024 scoping review of 33 studies found none directly focused on career progression; participants in six studies raised concerns about disclosure harming their careers and three studies carried accounts of reduced opportunities after disclosure. In analogue hiring experiments disclosure alone did not close the gap, and the condition with no significant difference was disclosure plus evaluator neurodiversity training. A 2022 survey of 166 working adults with ADHD found proactive disclosure associated with thriving at work, cross sectionally. - [How much does an ADHD assessment cost?](https://www.neurodiversion.org/answers/how-much-does-an-adhd-assessment-cost): There is no single nationwide standard price for a US adult ADHD assessment, and no US clinical practice guideline for diagnosing ADHD in adults either; CHADD and APSARD are developing the first, due 2027. Quotes vary with the services and billing units included, the clinician and practice design, local prices, insurance contracts, and sometimes the diagnostic questions being resolved, and these sources do not show how much of the variation each factor explains. CMS Medicare data for 2024, office place of service, gives average gross charges submitted on Original Medicare claims: 293.32 dollars for a psychiatric diagnostic evaluation, 288.14 dollars for the first hour of psychological test evaluation, 168.61 dollars for each additional hour, with test administration billed separately. Those are all-use averages from Medicare fee-for-service, not ADHD-specific and not observed self-pay prices. On testing, the American Academy of Pediatrics, in US guidance covering children and adolescents, says neuropsychological testing has not been found to improve diagnostic accuracy in most cases. - [Does insurance cover an ADHD assessment?](https://www.neurodiversion.org/answers/does-insurance-cover-adhd-assessment): It depends on the plan. CMS states that the US parity law does not require plans to cover mental health or substance use disorder benefits at all; it governs how a plan may limit benefits it already covers. The Affordable Care Act creates the coverage requirement, making mental health and substance use disorder services one of ten essential health benefit categories in non-grandfathered individual and small group plans. At the federal level that leaves large group coverage to the plan document, though state law may add mandates on top. Covered is not the same as paid for: deductibles, out-of-network classification and prior authorisation on testing all survive coverage. For a group health plan governed by 29 CFR 2590.712(d), the plan must give any current or potential participant its mental health medical necessity criteria on request and the reason for any denial; individual-market and public coverage sit under parallel or different rules. Across HealthCare.gov Marketplace plans in 2024, KFF found insurers received about 496 million claims, of which 451 million were in network and about 85 million of those were denied, an average in-network denial rate of 19 percent on post-service claims; consumers appealed less than 1 percent of denials and insurers upheld 66 percent of the appeals they decided. - [What if I can't afford an assessment?](https://www.neurodiversion.org/answers/what-if-i-cant-afford-an-assessment): Start with what the diagnosis is for, because the routes ask for different evidence: ADHD medication requires a clinical diagnosis and prescribing evaluation, a workplace request can start without naming a diagnosis though a covered employer may seek limited documentation where the need is not obvious, and self-understanding requires neither. Several funded US routes are worth asking about. Under 42 U.S. Code 254b and 42 CFR 51c.303, a federally funded health center must run a discount schedule set against the federal poverty guidelines, with a full discount or nominal charge at or below the guidelines, a sliding discount up to twice them, and nothing federally required above that; a center cannot deny service for inability to pay, but that is not a promise no balance is billed. Under 34 CFR 361.48 and 361.54 a state vocational rehabilitation unit must make assessment for determining eligibility and rehabilitation needs available and may not apply a financial needs test to either. Medicaid EPSDT obliges states to cover necessary diagnostic services for people under 21 whether or not they are in the state plan. NHS England's independent ADHD Taskforce recommended that early support be needs-led and not require a clinical diagnosis. - [Is therapy useful for autistic adults?](https://www.neurodiversion.org/answers/is-therapy-useful-for-autistic-adults): It can help with an autistic adult's co-occurring mental health needs, but the adult evidence is limited and does not establish any one approach as broadly better. A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis by Perez-Castilla and colleagues in Autism in Adulthood pooled 10 randomised controlled trials of CBT in autistic adults aged 16 and over (537 participants) and concluded that CBT showed very uncertain effects across most outcomes; at under six months CBT may reduce depression and anxiety and improve quality of life, and may have little to no effect on social anxiety, functioning, obsessive-compulsive symptoms and mental health symptom severity, all at very low certainty, while for autistic traits it may increase scores. Most included trials were small and at high risk of bias. A separate 2026 meta-analysis by Smith, Holmes and White covered 35 controlled studies of adult interventions of many types, not psychotherapy alone, and found pooled effects on mental health (16 studies, g = 0.35), social cognition (16 studies, g = 0.45) and quality of life (8 studies, g = 0.64, CI 0.14 to 1.15); it did not establish pooled improvements in behavioural, cognitive, adaptive or employment outcomes, which is not the same as proving no effect. Comparators were largely treatment as usual or waitlist, so the estimates do not show superiority over a specific active alternative. NICE guidance for England and Wales recommends offering psychosocial interventions informed by guidance for the specific coexisting disorder, delivered by staff who understand autism, with adaptations to language, structure, pace and environment. The field is early: a 2026 review by Deakin and colleagues screened 4,186 records and included 69 papers, 42 adult-only and 27 with mixed adult and younger samples, of which 42 were pilot or feasibility studies. ## Respuestas (Spanish) Spanish translations of the answers above, at `https://www.neurodiversion.org/es/respuestas/`.
